Description
1924 $20 MS66 PCGS Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle

The 1924 Twenty dollar gold double eagle is part of a series of Saint Gaudens gold double eagle coins struck from 1908-1933. Struck in Philadelphia and designated as a Business (MS) strike, this coin is made of 90% gold; 10% copper from a mintage of 4,323,500 struck.

One of the most frequently encountered Saint-Gaudens coins is the 1924 Philly $20. Plentiful in circulated condition and even up to Gem, one who seeks an example -- even an especially nice piece -- should have little trouble locating it. MS66s are readily available, and there is a small but significant supply of MS67s. A tiny handful of examples are known in higher grades, and these often trade for huge premiums, particularly when registry set collectors get involved in the bidding.

Obverse: Liberty is portrayed standing on a rock, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The word LIBERTY appears on the top periphery surrounded by stars. The date is stamped on the right side of the coin, just above the rock.

Reverse: A crescent sun appears at the bottom as if rising on the horizon with long rays extending to the top of the coin. A flying eagle covers the central portion, atop the rays. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS appear on the top periphery.
