Description
1911-S $20 MS65 PCGS Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle

The 1911-S Twenty dollar gold double eagle is part of a series of Saint Gaudens gold double eagle coins struck from 1908-1933. Struck in San Francisco and designated as a Business (MS) strike, this coin is made of 90% gold; 10% copper from a mintage of 775,750 struck.

The 1911-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle is fairly common as far as Saints go. The coin is readily obtainable in circulated and lower uncirculated grades, though pieces grading MS65 or better are much scarcer and only a relative few are known in MS66 or better and are sought most especially by registry set collectors.

Obverse: Liberty is portrayed standing on a rock, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The word LIBERTY appears on the top periphery surrounded by stars. The date is stamped on the right side of the coin, just above the rock.

Reverse: A crescent sun appears at the bottom as if rising on the horizon with long rays extending to the top of the coin. A flying eagle covers the central portion, atop the rays. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS appear on the top periphery.
